Have visited Alaska three times in the last 12 years. Various ways: Lindblad small ship trip, flew in and rented a car, took Alaska Marine Highway Ferry from Bellingham, WA, to Juneau - *** then flew to Anchorage, bus to Seward, ferry to Kodiak.
The last time had a trip in the dark when loading on ferry at 4:00 a.m. at Juneau. Hit steel door frame head first; 100 stitches in hard head and three days in Juneau Hospital. Looked a sad black and blue case, but continued on three-week journey. Missed last ferry before freeze-up. So, took route*** described above. Got 50 stitches out at Kodiak Hospital.
Met a nice local couple where I stayed in Kodiak. He introduced himself by asking, "What happened to the other guy?" They gave me good info on what to do and where to go with my hiking.
I would almost sell my soul as Faust to live and work in Alaska. Offer me a job from cooking, housekeeping, secretarial, any kind of administration, or all together and I'm there ASAP.
